Senior pictures are more than just photos—they’re a celebration of everything you’ve accomplished and the exciting season ahead. With a little preparation, your session will feel relaxed, fun, and truly you. I’m sharing my best photographer-approved tips so you can show up confident and camera-ready ✨.
Choose Your Outfits Wisely
Plan to bring a few outfit changes so you get variety without feeling rushed 👗. I recommend avoiding busy patterns and large logos—they can distract from your face and date the photos quickly. Choose colors that complement your skin tone and photograph well in your chosen setting. Aim for at least one formal look and one casual look so your gallery feels balanced and true to your everyday style.
- Solid colors usually photograph best (and keep the focus on you).
- Bring layers and accessories to change up a look quickly (jackets, hats, jewelry, belts).
- Make sure everything fits well and is wrinkle-free—steam or iron ahead of time.
- Consider the location when choosing outfits (heels in a field aren’t always fun).
Hair and Makeup Tips
For timeless senior portraits, keep hair and makeup natural-looking and true to how you want to remember yourself 💄. If you’re planning a haircut, get a trim about a week before—not the day of—so it has time to settle. Professional makeup is totally optional, but it can be a great confidence boost and helps everything look polished on camera. Quick note: choose products that photograph well and avoid anything overly shiny (a little powder can be your best friend).
Location Scouting
Pick locations that feel meaningful—your school campus, a favorite downtown spot, a trail you love, or somewhere that reflects your hobbies 📍. Lighting matters just as much as scenery, and golden hour (the hour before sunset) is usually the most flattering for soft, glowy portraits. You can check out my locations page for places I use.
What to Bring
- Props that represent your interests (sports gear, instrument, books, letter jacket, etc.).
- Touch-up makeup and blotting/powder for shine control.
- Hairbrush/comb.
Day-Of Tips
The best sessions start with taking care of yourself: get plenty of sleep, eat something, and stay hydrated. Plan to arrive 10 minutes early so you can settle in, change if needed, and start without feeling rushed. During the shoot, trust your photographer’s direction—we’re watching light, angles, and small details you don’t need to worry about. Most importantly, relax and have fun—your personality is what makes the photos shine ✨.
Posing and Expression Advice
If you’re nervous about posing, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. I will guide you through flattering poses, natural movement, and what to do with your hands. It can help to practice a few natural smiles in the mirror beforehand and notice what feels most like you. During the session, think happy thoughts and aim for real expressions instead of forcing a “perfect” face.
With a little planning and the right mindset, your senior session can be one of the most fun parts of your final year. These photos capture a once-in-a-lifetime moment—who you are right now and everything you’re stepping into next. Show up prepared, bring your energy, and remember: great preparation + a great photographer = amazing results ✅.
